Personality: Melody is a curious and fun-loving young woman. She is rather headstrong and quick to take on a challenge. She has a passion for music and is constantly composing melodies in her head. She enjoys learning, especially when it comes to music. While Melody is not naturally a people person, she has become quite efficient at it through her years travelling as an entertainer. She is very protective of her instruments, because she feels it links her to her parents. She also maintains a huge sense of mistrust for the Powers, while she does not know what the Companies are actually up to, she does feel like they are manipulative and underhanded. She does not really trust nor like anyone with any connection to the companies, with the exception of Roxy who had deserted the Eyes. Melody really loved her parents, even if she felt that they were overprotective, and is constantly trying to find them. When she gets really scared or nervous her eyelashes will start fluttering quickly and she will occasionally put a bit of hair in her mouth and start chewing; she hates these characteristics and has worked hard to get them under control.
Strengths: Her powers are obviously a major strength, however she is also a quick learner and therefore can adapt to new situations fairly easily. Her years of travelling have given her enough experience to where she has become quite good at judging a person’s character.
Weaknesses: Her powers, namely density control, can take several moments to take full effect (at max 2-minutes), making her vulnerable in surprise situations. For this reason she is also susceptible to drowning, as she becomes heavier and more stone/steel-like in her higher densities.
When Everything Changed
Powers & Abilities: Density control – At her lowest density (default density) her sensitivity is fairly low, making it to where extreme temperatures (flames or ice) take several seconds to have a noticeable effect on her. She is less likely to be cut/scratched, but is still entirely vulnerable to stabbings and/or bullets/guns. Her highest density (and lowest sensitivity) makes her virtually invulnerable to physical attacks. Her skin gives the appearance of a non-glossy gray metal, and her hair turns silver. She becomes basically fireproof, bulletproof, and blade resistant in this form, and weighs well over 600lbs.
Super Strength – As Melody’s density is altered, her level of strength adjusts automatically to compensate for the increase in weight. This power is a passive ability, meaning that she cannot achieve the same level of strength while in her regular form (lowest density). In her lowest density her strength is that of an Olympic athlete, and at the highest density level she can lift 150% her own weight.
Location During the Boom: St. Augustine, FL
Current Residence: No permanent residence; travels mainly throughout Clear Sight territory.
Before & After
History:
Melody May McBride was born on January 2nd of 2003 in St. Augustine, Florida to May & Joseph McBride—a pair of traveling entertainers. Joe was a natural on the piano, and could play just about anything from memory, and May had a beautiful voice, nigh angelic. Joe and May were in the middle of a tour when Melody decided she was ready to meet the world—a week early, much to the surprise of her parents who had scheduled their tour around the supposed date of birth. When Melody was born she was very small, weighing about 5lb, 8oz. Because of how small she was, her parents were constantly worrying about her and trying to keep her away from anything that could hurt her. Growing up, Melody was her parents’ little princess—she was their only child and they adored and doted on her. The combination of worry and adoration would on more than one occasion smother Melody and hinder chances to grow, learn, and explore. However, her parents tried to compensate by sharing with her the love of music and teaching her how to play multiple instruments.
Because her parents were always worried about her, they left her with May’s mom while they were travelling. Melody definitely was not happy with this arrangement; her grandma was just as strict and careful as her parents. She would continually beg to go with her parents, receiving the same answer, “When you are older and strong enough to handle such a trip, then we will take you.” Finally, on her ninth birthday, they announced that they would take her with them to their first venue on their schedule; they felt that if she was to follow in their footsteps, then it was about time she received a little taste of the performing lifestyle. Melody was practically bouncing off the walls with this news; she could hardly wait until that day. When the day finally arrived, after what seemed like forever to Melody, she watched excitedly as her parents packed the van and trailer with instruments, equipment, and other necessities. After her parents had put the last item in the vehicle, Melody climbed in to the van wriggling with anticipation; within less than an hour however, she promptly fell asleep. After that little trip with her family, her passion for music was solidified and she made up her mind that someday she too was going to travel around making and performing music. While, her parents were gone she practiced her music dutifully for hours on end each day, except for days when her friend from next door would come over. Natalie was about 18 months older than Melody, and considerably taller, as Mel had always been on the petite side. Whenever Natalie would come over, her and Melody would play pretend with their dolls—oftentimes would play as performers and entertainers as both girls loved music. Some days when Natalie came over, they would practice together; Natalie would play her violin and Melody would usually accompany her on the piano. They talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up, laughed together, cried together, and had a lot of fun together; they were practically inseparable. That December Natalie and her family left to visit some relatives in Los Angeles. Before, they left Natalie gave Melody a friendship bracelet and told her that she would miss her, but that she would be back soon; they said that no matter how far away they were, they would always be friends. Of course that was before their worlds were turned upside down and the world as they knew it would never be the same again.
January 1st, 2012, the day of The Boom, Melody was at an old playground with her grandmother while her parents were off buying decorations for her birthday, which was the next day. The playground was from the 1980s, and had never been remodeled, so that meant it was made of metal and built into cement. When the third wave of radiation washed over St. Augustine the molecules of the metal and concrete become unstable, and Melody’s own molecules went into a state of flux. Metal and concrete shattered and flew at the young girl, but instead of being maimed it was as though her body just absorbed the materials. She heard her grandma scream just before passing out from the pain and dizziness that came with the intense radiation. When Melody woke up the next morning, her whole body felt like it was burning and she felt very sick and dizzy. She opened her eyes, however everything was a blur. As Melody painfully glanced around, she saw something in the distance that appeared to have the shape of a human. She began to slowly drag her body in that direction, and when she reached the object she saw that her grandma had been turned into a concrete statue of herself; her frail constitution rejected the mutation, transforming her into her current state. The young girl was not sure what had happened or even where she was, but she knew she had to try to make it back home. She painfully struggled to stand up, but her body felt like it was heavier than usual. She finally made it to her feet and started off in the direction she was hoping was the way home. Her movement was very slow and each step unsteady, she was so dizzy. She could not figure out what had happened and she was alone for the first time in her life and that terrified the 9 year old girl. Finally, she could not take another step and she fell to the ground. The next day she was still unconscious on the ground, when a woman saw this she rushed over to Melody trying to survey the situation. She saw no family around and figured that she must be lost and based on her condition that the radiation from the explosion must have affected her. She could not figure out why, but something inside of her stirred and she decided that she had to take the girl home and try to nurse her back to health.
When Melody awoke later that day, she was in an unfamiliar bed and there was a lady, whom she did not know, sitting next to her wiping her forehead with a damp towel. Melody still felt awful and her vision was still blurred; she tried to speak to find out what was going on but her lips would not form and no sound came out. She was very scared, but the woman started to stroke her hand and talk in a soft voice which soothed her slightly. She soon fell back into a deep slumber and for the next couple of days she fell in and out of consciousness. Finally, several days later, Melody was starting to become more coherent and was staying awake for longer periods. When she awoke with some coherency she realized that she was definitely not at home and the woman was someone she had never met before. She found out that the lady’s name was Roxy and that Roxy had found Melody unconscious on the street and had taken her in.
Over the next few days, Melody experienced chronic lethargy. Her powers, which she was unaware of at that time, were very unstable, causing her density and therefore her weight to constantly fluctuate. The frequent shifting of her mass put a strain on her muscles and heart, leaving her tired and weak. Roxy started to notice these symptoms and began to realize that the girl was not merely suffering from a sickness or the radiation, so she kept a closer watch on the girl attempting to figure out what may be going on inside her body. After a couple days, she started piecing the symptoms together and with the help of her former training in a special group called the Eyes, she realized The Boom had mutated Melody’s physical constitution and granted her certain special abilities. Using similar techniques that were taught to her during her time with the Eyes, she began training Melody in a like manner, hoping to help her achieve the capacity to control her mass.
Melody took to the training and was an eager student. While she was not happy about what had happened to her, she had always been a curious girl and enjoyed learning new things. So, since she was stuck with this strange thing that had happened to her, she figured that it was best to learn how to control it, as that would be to her advantage.
At the age of eighteen, Melody now possessed the ability to control her powers and had actually become quite proficient at it. While her time with Roxy was full and she had been taken care of very well, she never forgot her parents and never stopped wondering where they were or if they were alive. So, she decided that she was going to attempt to find either her parents themselves or at least information about what had happened to them. Her parting with Roxy was a sad one, filled with many tears as Roxy had been a second mother to her. However, Roxy was confident that Melody was intelligent enough and powerful enough to survive on her own. Although they would miss each other dearly, they both knew that this was necessary and so Melody went on her way. Melody started to eke out a living as a travelling entertainer to support her search for her parents…the search continues.
Sample RP: Melody took a deep breath as she waited backstage; this would be her first performance on Easter Island and she wanted it to go smoothly. She picked up her violin and played a few soft notes to make sure the instrument was still tuned. This simple act calmed her nerves and she was reminded once again why she had chosen the life of entertaining. She knew that out in the audience were people who needed a relief from the torn apart world; they were people who were waiting with anticipation to be swept away into a different world—the still beautiful world of music and daydreams. This was why she had decided to become an entertainer, so that she could help to bring a little happiness into this distraught world. Melody was startled out of her thoughts as she heard the announcer, “Please welcome our entertainment for tonight, the beautiful and talented Melody May McBride.” She heard their applause as she walked onto the stage carrying her violin and it warmed her heart. She stood in the center of the stage, raised her bow to the violin, and began playing some of the classical melodies that she had loved growing up; this included Swan Lake, which had always been her favorite. As she played, the music filled her body and she began to look like the music; every note was played with the passion and emotion that she felt. The program was filled with musical and vocal performances; the last song she chose to perform was “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.” However, before she performed it, she spoke to the audience, “I thank you all for being such a wonderful audience and I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to perform for you. Before we say good bye, I have one last song I would like to perform if everybody is okay with that.” Before she had finished her sentence the crowd began clapping and cheering her on; she gave them a big smile that showed her dimples, they were one of the best audiences she had performed for. “Thank you! Before I begin, I would like to tell you why I chose this song. This song means so much to me and I am sure that many of you will be able to relate. The Boom caused a lot of chaos and did a lot of damage, but I think the most damage it did was tearing apart families and friends. I lost track of my family and my best friend, which is why this song means so much to me.” The crowd grew very silent with both solemnity and anticipation. As she opened her mouth, her beautiful soprano voice came out softly with a somber quality only to build in power and intensity with each climax. As the last note died slowly, the crowd stood to their feet with thunderous applause. Melody had tears in her eyes both from the emotions of the song and from their gracious acceptance. She curtsied and gave the crowd a bright smile through her tears and proceeded offstage. It had been a great night but she knew she could not stay here, there had been no information on her parents so she would have to continue searching elsewhere.
